Hey all,
I noticed that Disc Brakes are illegal for UCI sanctioned cyclocross races and wondered if anyone knew why. I have heard the arguments about disc brakes acting as a "scythe" or a "guillotine"that could injure people but that seems fairly unlikely. I have heard the arguments about disc brakes weighing more than canti's (which is certainly true in most cases). I have also heard people rationalize that the cantilever brakes force riders to have greater cornering speed because you only need to "scrub speed" instead of slow down quickly. Yet, I can't help but think that when the weather gets nasty having brakes that actually stop would be a benefit.
-I personally don't run disc brakes, (although I probably would in the future because the cyclocross bike is so much fun on the street that having good brakes would make it even better) but it seems like a very logical choice to me. At Loveland I did see several people utilizing disc brakes. Is the no disc brake rule for the UCI races only for the elite classes or is it something that is enforced for all classes in UCI (or OVCX events)?

Yes, only for UCI elite classes, legal for all other classes.
I have no idea why they're outlawed.

I saw a girl at the USGP last year with a set of Zipp wheels w/ Chris King disc hubs...pretty sweet
