I have never done any cyclocross riding/racing. I understand that I may have to get off the bike and do some running. What shoes should I be using? What are some of the best shoes to use for racing?

Mountain bike shoes are the way to go. The tread should have some traction but should ideally not hold mud near the cleats. As for best shoes for racing, I have no idea.

The best shoes for racing are ones that fit, are light, won't come off in the mud, and aren't super-stiff. Other than that, it's all personal choice.

One thing to make sure you can do to your mtb/CX shoes is add toe spikes. I like Sidi's all metal spikes. Most mid to high end MTB shoes allow for spikes, but if you're looking at entry level shoes, beware, many do not. The threading is fairly standard so you don't have to wear Sidi's to use their spikes (I wear Specialized). Believe me, if you want to ensure good footing in wet, slippery, muddy, CX, conditions, you won't want to be without them.

Can someone interested in trying Cyclocross out use a mountain bike for the OVCS races? What are the bike requirements and limitations? What categories are the races divided into?

Sure, you can use a mountain bike. You'll see a couple at every race. People are very friendly/helpful and you're not going to feel like an odd man out on a mountain bike.
CX has categories 1-4 with 4 being the beginner. If you are over 35 or 45 you also have the choice of racing 3/4 35+ or 3/4/ 45+. Suggest you come on out to a race and try the Cat 4 race to get your feet wet. You'll love it. |

LJL, I agree with Chris. Cross is a very "approachable" version of cycling. If you live near one of the upcoming races (Columbus next weekm then Lousiville then Indy) come on out, sign up for a CAT 4 race and "run what you brung". It's a blast.
