As the time of year is approaching when trailwork becomes more fun (i.e., cooler weather, softer soil), I thought it would be a good idea for us to get together and talk about what the priorities should be for work at Capitol View this fall and winter.
So...I am suggesting that we (by "we" I mean anybody who is interested in working on trails at CV in the next few months) meet at CV this Saturday at 11 a.m. Ideally this will result in a list of projects and a person who will be in charge of each project.

The numer 1 thing at Cap View is to get the trails off the fall line. Going to be a big job, but this has to be a priority. Quality is better and more important than quanity.
I was amazed Cap View would put CVP emblems on rutted trails going straight up and down the fall line. Since they seem to support the trails, I would approach them about an RTP Grant to make a trail system to be proud of. Hire professionals to do the hard parts and use volunteer hours and a fundraiser or two to get the matching funds.
For me, I'd rather drive the hour to Morehead to ride super quality than the 20 minutes to Cap View to ride the Frankfort Fall Line.
I can't come to the meeting, but if I could I would say the above as respectfully as possible. |

have you been to Morehead lately? I didn't think they had anything worth driving for anymore cause of horses. I agree with you about cap. view, there is a lot of rutted fall line stuff that needs to go. I won't be at the meeting but I'll try to make some trail work days later on when I have a vehicle with a functioning transmission. |

Rowbear, ride your bike over. seenvic, i am not sure who Cap View is or who "they' are, but regular ole MTBers built those trails years ago and put up the emblams on the trees. We do have a good rep with the city and they allow us to do as needed with the trial system I beleive there is a unanimous conviction that the trails need to fall in line with Imba standards that are more sustainable than needing yearly repair or reroutes. That is part of what this meeting is about. There is a lot of work that needs to be done, however, wiht only a few workers only so much can be accomplished. I hate to oversight the ovious but we often need those reminders. It will take a lot of man hours to change all those fall line trails. Drive the 20 minutes and help us out bro!! thanks for your suggestions. |

| I would be happy to work on the trail giving a hour or so a week if its of any help. Dont really have any experience but love to ride the park so feel like I should give back a little. I am unable to make the meeting due to kids soccer schedule but who ever is taking the lead can email me and we can see how I can help. Was planning on taking the kids out there this weekend and picking up trash along the trails near the parking lots. |

Bob, By Cap View I meant the management of the park. "They" are managers of Cap View Park who either put up the CVP emblems or gave MTBers permission to put them up.
I never for a minute envisioned volunteers "fixing" Cap View. That is why I suggested acquiring funds and hiring professionals to do the heavy lifting and use volunteers to help the pros and supply some of the match for the funding along the way. I don't think it is volunteers place to build or do the type of maintenance overhaul needed at Cap View.
I don't live 20 minutes from Cap View. I live 8 hours from Cap View. I grew up 20 minutes from Cap View and ride there when I visit home. If I lived there, I would be at the meetings and would be driving what I am recommending. I was where you are with trail maintenance about 10ish years ago and took steps to obtain funding as the solution to the problem. Having succeeded at maintaining our existing trails and building another 80 miles or so, I heavily recommend obtaining funding and hiring professionals. You'll find you like the trails better, your time spent working as a volunteer is more productive and you ride your bike more as you'll do less work.
All that said, Cap View is a great resource and the riders who built it should be proud. I think what I suggesting would make them even more proud for a whole lot longer period of time.
Rowbear, I rode Morehead a few weeks ago and thought the ride out of the visitors center onto the Lakeview Trail (???) and then on Big Limestone was stellar. Nice hike up Amburgy Rock to a great view. Pisgah has nothing on this ride. Looking forward to T-giving and riding there again.
Anyone, How'd the meeting go?

| I still have not done much riding in eastern Kentucky which is unfortnate on my part. Most of the trails I have been on out there are horsed up and not built to IMBA standards, I'm referring to IRON furnace, caney loop, buck skin, and parts of the sheltowee trace trail that allow mountain biking (Sp). Are the more head trails in a different from the trails I mention above? ARe horses aloud on them? I would like to ride them if they are of the quality you speak of. |
