So....I'm looking at putting a threadless fork on my bike. I have the fork, stem, and headset to do it. However, looking at the instructions leads me to believe I might not be able to do this myself. It's saying something about a press and special tool to place the "fork crown race" into the fork. Should I just take it to a shop or try my Dexter's lab mentality on it?

Don't dexter it. You can do it yourself with the proper bought or home made tools (I have put on several with my set up). But if you are not mechanically inclined probably best to take it to your LBS because you can screw it up if you don't know what you're doing. Probably the trickiest part is removing the old headset.

I'm decently mechanically inclined. I'm a machine designer and have torn an Rx7 to the chassis and built it back up. However I'm limited on tools at the moment as I don't have a shop at my disposal. Just a standard toolbox and a 32 oz mallet. One of the local shops said they'd do it for $30. I really don't want to spend anymore money on this as it's already gone over what I was trying to spend, but I don't want to screw it up either. The biggest issue I can see is getting out the bearings that are in the frame now. I also don't know if I need spacers or if I can get away with using some Mobil 1 synthetic bearing grease instead of some "bike" specific grease.

If you have a good relationship with a shop, take it there and see if they'll let you watch.
There are special tools, but you can make your own, but to me, it's still better to see how it's done. Watch and learn, then you can do it yourself next time.

For $30, unless you can knock it out in less than an hour, two max, it sounds like it's worth it to take it to the LBS. Plus, you'd hate to screw it up just to save a fraction of what the fork probably cost.

Of course, this is coming from someone who is riding his bike as a single speed because he can't figure out how to adjust his rear derailleur to work in more than one gear!

The fork is a used fork I bought for $30. The headset and stem are from Nashbar and the cheapest they had (Cane Creek/Nashbar stem).  The whole goal behind the project was to cheaply replace the virtually useless RST fork that came on my '98 Schwinn Mesa. I was just trying to make the bike offroad functional until I can sell a kidney and buy an FS bike.
