LOUISVILLE (May 14, 2008) – Citizens can help shape the future of the 6,191-acre Jefferson Memorial Forest during a public meeting on Wednesday, May 21.  Based in part on feedback from the meeting, Metro Parks will develop a comprehensive master plan for the nation's largest municipal urban forest by fall 2008.

The public meeting takes place at 6 p.m. at Fairdale High School , 1001 Fairdale Road .  The agenda includes an overview of the planning effort, a summary of information gathered so far, and opportunities to offer suggestions on recreational opportunities in the forest.

At future meetings, citizens can review and respond to conceptual plans for the forest and help shape a detailed vision for expansion of the forest, facility development and public programs. The planning process will also explore possible routes through the forest for the paved Louisville Loop trail.

Citizens who are unable to attend the meeting can offer feedback, review planning documents and sign up for e-mail notices about future meetings at http://www.louisvilleky.gov/MetroParks/parks/jeffersonmemorialforest/Master+Plan+Public+Documents.htm.

Expansion of Jefferson Memorial Forest is a major component of the City of Parks initiative announced by Mayor Jerry Abramson in 2005. The City of Parks initiative includes the acquisition and development of new park land, significant improvements to existing parks, development of a paved Louisville Loop trail of more than 100 miles encircling the community, and connecting the community to parks through improved stewardship and nature education.

The Jefferson Memorial Forest master planning effort is being managed by Metro Parks, with consulting services provided by Jones & Jones Architects and Landscape Architects, LLC.  The Louisville Metro Parks Foundation is providing $200,000 for the project, with an additional $80,000 from Louisville Metro Government and $20,000 from the Louisville Metro Council -- $9,000 from Vicki Welch (D-13), $5,000 from Rick Blackwell (D-12), $2,000 each from Kelly Downard (R-16) and Madonna Flood (D-24), and $1,000 each from Bob Henderson (D-14) and Dan Johnson (D-21).

Jefferson Memorial Forest is a woodland tribute to those Kentucky veterans who have served our nation during times of war. Outdoor environmental education programs are offered at the forest, providing learning opportunities for thousands of students and teachers each year. The forest offers a full range of recreational amenities, including weekend education and adventure programs, hiking trails, camping, fishing, horseback riding trails and picnic areas. It'd be nice if they opened a portion of the trails to mountain biking. It's ironic that the 1995 document claimed that mountain biking would be too harsh on the landscape...right after the section about how horseback riding is allowed on some trails despite the questionable sustainability of these trails. I don't know if it will do anything or not, but I sent in an email to comment on the master plan and put in a good word for mountain bikers. I have yet to get into trail work, but I have really appreciated the work done by KYMBA in the area.

As an aside...When I went off to MN for college, Cherokee was a mess. Now that I've moved back down here and getting more into riding, I have found it to be in much better shape than it was. Back then there were so many rogue trails it was impossible to know what was what. I don't know if there were many rules back then, but I just pretty much rode whatever I could find.

Just wanted to push this back up to the top.  It would be great to have twenty or more Mountain bikers show up for this.

Spread the word!

Thanks

The greater reality is that MTBing can be allowed again with organization and planning ahead with clear plan and sustainable trailbuilding practices. Please try to make this, i'm trying to get away from work for a couple hours to make this, hope to see ya'll there Chris and MD!!!

I will be there.

It is kind of goofy that Advocacy topics don't show up in the latest kymba post column, but yet all of the off topic that isn't relevant does show up.

Anyone go?  I couldn't go, but I received a response to my email yesterday saying they've received some good input from mountain bikers.  Hopefully something will happen because the forest has huge potential.

I was there along with Pat Collins, Eric O'Neal,  Sean Manion, Nathan Webster, and Mike Dullin.  It is really great to see you guys there.  We really appreciate it.

It was an informative and productive meeting.  I left there feeling like we have a good chance at getting some sort of access even though no official made that promise or commitment.   The planners and park officials seem to take our suggestions seriously and had good questions for us.  I also feel like we had a lot to offer up in the form of contributions that we have already made to other metro parks.

I don't know what sort of access we might get, but I believe we can affect the decision by showing up to these meetings in large numbers, making comments when given the opportunity and most importantly of all being good stewards of the trails we already have access to.  The more of us that show up the higher priority mountain bikers are going to be given. Six people showing up for this first meeting was a descent turn out but we really need more.  It would be nice to have 20 or more show up to each of these meetings.  We have to show them we are interested in the Forrest.

There is probably 3 to 5 more public input meetings.  This is just the beginning of a long process.  If we really want to be able ride in the Forrest we are going to have to be persistent and patient.

Thanks to all of you for fighting the good fight.
It is nice to know people are getting up and DOING something instead of just sitting around talking.
I am closing on my house or I would have been there. Selling a house SUX!

Not being able to sell a house sux even more. Congrats on getting rid of it.

I got the feeling at the meeting that were we being a bit patronized, but maybe it was just me. I could be biased from going to other meetings in the past with a certain someone and getting the old "good comment, now move along" vibe.
