We can have 60 to 100 people turn out on a Sunday morning to have a race but yet for trail days we are lucky to get 5 or 6 people to turn out.
Pretty sad I agree.
Wow 5 pages of bellyachin. |

Posted By Tonybob on 06/13/2008 12:14 AM cherokee isnt the same. waverly isnt the same. duffield isnt the same. otter isnt the same. the roads have even been repaved. the bikes and components are better. might as just quit, its all too easy. or we could all buy rigid bikes with cantis and ride the horse trails at taylorsville lake and talk about how good the good old days were and the 10 technical root strewn miles we rode uphill, both ways. That is the best thing I have read so far today.
Oh wait, I got beat by a guy on a rigid single speed a few weeks back,

The reroutes are great and anyone who gets off his or her respective butt to do the work deserves a big pat on the back. Anyone who says otherwise is itching for a fight. |

Last 2,
Step away from the keyboards, Strap on your helmets, and go ride the trails you are lucky to have. L-ville has some of the best selection within a 30 min drive of any Metro area in the country. I'll see you out there. peace |

OK everyone - I have a request: It's been a full week since the reroute was finished and we obviously all have very strong opinions - about the trails and other people. Again - it's just a request - but I think it would be best if we just agree to disagree and politely move on (or have the group hug that G Man suggested). John makes a good point - no one deserves to go to hell over a difference of opinion and I'd much rather have people come out in droves and share their opinions at the Jefferson Memorial Forest planning meetings. That's really where we can make a larger impact.
So for now, please take my word for it; the reroute at no-net did not happen because of the race. I was part of the planning sessions and it was entirely based on the land manager's concern over general user safety. (for those of you that follow these sorts of things, Otter Creek is still dealing with the fallout from the little girl that pitched off the cliff riding the OCP two summers ago)
However, I can promise you all that as we continue our work in Cherokee - and all of the other parks - we will DEFINITELY be constructing highly technical alternate lines - and even highly technical alternate trails - whenever possible.
Thanks for your time - hope to see you all out on the bike. |

In SoCal all of the managed trail systems have a "bunny" option rerouted around the highly technical stuff. This option is usually on the left. They also have a grand habit of building "stunts", chutes off the main trail every few miles. It's always on the right and almost always a naturally fallen tree that has been ramped up with other natural debris from the vicinity, making for nice air, ala "roam". This mix gives all users something to shoot for.
Granted we are talking about alot more space than the park but you get the jist. ;-D
Just some ideas to consider.

I would never have resorted to fisticuffs anyway, though. If someone were itching for a fight, it wouldn't have been me. I'm a pacifist, especially if it's likely that I'd get pounded.

I don't even know where No Net is. I tried to find it yesterday so I could see what people were talking about, but I guess I missed it. I'm still trying to familiarize myself with all the trails and not ride the same stuff every time.
Parked near Cochran Hill Rd, took the paved trail towards the Baringer Spring, took a left on to the bike trail that leads up to Hogan's Fountain, passed the fountain and over the topless hump and out to the Scenic Loop, took the road a short ways and took the trail to the right, wound around in the trees a bit, I think I crossed another road and must have passed the tennis courts at some point, then I came out at an intersection (Cherokee Park Rd?, Park Boundary Rd???)...I tried to find more trail I hadn't ridden before, but ended up taking the road down to Big Rock and tried to go up that one rocky section by the parking lot (I'd only gone down it before), then decided to take the trails through the bird sanctuary, past the dog park, and back to where I had parked.
It was a nice little loop, but I felt I was missing something. Are there trails on the playground side of the stream near Big Rock?

| You should have crossed the road at the intersection and went right to stay on the same side of the creek. This begins the No-Net trail. |

Yeah...that...what Chuck said...when come out of the trail from the bottom of the tennis courts, hang a right cross the road and head towards the woods, you'll see the trail head. When you come out of no-net, head to the street, jog left, cross the bridge, then right turn heads you back to big rock... Don't know how familiar you are...but when you're coming back on the road out of Big Rock...just past the intersection there at Seneca Golf Course off to the right you'll see a trail...pick up some speed and you can jump the golf cart path...follow that trail for a short bit and you'll come out on to the the road...just 'cross the road and down a twenty or so yards, on the left you'll find the entrance to Wilderness Loop.. Have fun! |

I walked my dog around the trails today. After descending from the tennis courts to the street, I found the trail on the other side this time and followed it down past a couple rocky waterfall-ish sections and eventually out to a road. There was another unmarked and overgrown trail on the other side that followed the creek towards big rock. I'm assuming people don't ride this trail.
Hopefully I'm still not missing anything, although I'm still not exactly sure what No Net is. I was thinking it would be obvious, unless I missed it (again).

You got it. The first rocky waterfall-ish section used to squeeze you between the edge and a huge upturned rootball. If you stalled here, chances were you would end up in the rocky wash several feet down below. A buddy of mine cracked his helmet and nearly broke his forearm there in '98 or '99. After you exit the No-Net trail, you have to cross the bridge and turn right on the road there. You can then go right as you climb the hill and this begins the upper big rock trail. Pay attention or it will bite you as well. s0ckeyes, you are welcome to ride with me most Tuesday afternoons. I will unfortunately not be able to ride this Tuesday, but should get there most dry Tuesdays thereafter. |

Cool. Thanks. I walked the upper big rock trail, and there are some interesting sections. Stuff seems a lot easier when you're walking it though. If I can break away on a Tuesday, I may shoot you a message.

| I know chances are around 50% for rain but if the thunderstorms hit like they are supposed too I'd be willing to bet that major calls the race off. |
