This came from an exchange on KyCyclist. Just though more people should know about it. It starts with Barry's response to a post from another rider who knows the cyclist that was assulted:
John, The assault that you describe sickens me. I hope that the victim or a witness called LMPD to the scene of the crime immediately. If not, the victim needs to call LMPD right away. Please tell the victim and any witnesses to write (or speak into a recorder) everything that they remember about the incident ASAP. The more times they tell the story to others, the easier it is for them to remember interpretations rather than the actual facts. It is critical that they record the facts now before memories fade or morph. The second step is to contact a lawyer. If the victim contacts me, I will provide a list of lawyers recommended for personal injury cases involving cyclists. This attack, as you describe it, is clearly a criminal matter likely involving a felony. A civil case to pursue damages could follow a criminal case if the victim chose to pursue it. Criminal charges will largely depend on the police investigation.
I wish Dan and his wife a speedy and complete recovery from the physical injuries and trauma of this attack. If Dan chooses to share any more information with me, Bicycling for Louisville will do whatever we can to help him get justice and to help the community learn that this type of assault is intolerable.

That sucks. I hope the dude is OK. Along with the motorcyclist in Jeff who got shot, just shows its dangerous to mouth off anymore. On a somewhat related note, the "cycling lane" on second street seem to be more of a suggestion than a rule. Even our beloved law enforcement officers now use it as an express lane. In fact, he followed another car for almost 1 mile. I thought "oh good, hes gonna site this chick for driving in the bike lane." Nope. After she turned, he just accelerated down to Broadway. I was pissed. I filed a report and am sure that absolutely nothing will be done. Maybe cops would get some respect once they obey a law or two themselves. Sorry, was I ranting? |

I feel real sorry for the dude that got jumped. Full moons, summer heat and the lack of care for humans by modern society add up to a dangerous world.
Just like in a car, when you commute you need defensive capabilites. Permit to carry or bear repellent are good choices. I should design a bottle cage holster mount...
If you aren't armed or combat trained, don't mouth off even when you are in the right. Too many nut jobs are out there and you will get attacked, injured or even killed.
