| I wonder who the first car company would be to make a car that would run on biofuel derived from cats. What would that car be called? |

So. If a Government Employee has a take home car and works a second job 20 - 30 miles from his home, is he allowed to drive the take home car to his second job?
Or, if a Government Employee has a take home car should he be able to use this vehicle for private transportation?
Example. Transportation Dept. worker driving a Ford Taurus with Government sticker on the door going to Dick's Sporting Goods with her Kids?
I'm thinking of starting to carry my digital Recorder and becoming another "Jimmy Justice" type. |

Hey MEK, if you're really that concerned, find out by contacting the Transportation Inspector General. http://transportation.ky.gov/oig/ But, if you're just looking for more stuff to bitch about without really wanting to take any action...carry on.
Oh yeah... since you became the self-appointed spell checker for BTC, I thought you would like to know that you used the wrong word - aloud vs. allowed.

| Here's an article (an op-ed piece in the NYT) regarding gas prices. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/28/opinion/28friedman.html?em&ex=1212206400&en=6acc7e173e4e0dc8&ei=5087%0A. The free market is doing it's thing and we are starting to see the market correct itself. Oil will result in market failure for the short term, as it is a necessary commodity, but the long term market correction is making it more competitive as new technologies (or old ones like bikes) become more used. As far as government cars go, there are limitations for some and they are considered a perk, like good health insurance or pension. Not to say they are not abused. |

If I were a middle-aged rich man with a (perceived) need for a sports car, this is what I'd get...

Tesla Roadster 0 to 60 in 3.9 sec 13,000 rpm redline 100% electric (runs on Li-Ion Batteries) 220 miles per charge (costs less than 2 cents per mile) Price: $98,000

| Tom Friedman is the new Paul Ehrlich of econmics. Although I agree with most of what he is saying in that OP-ED piece about candidates, his methods are suspect. Why does everyone think (actually, it is almost a supposition in the media) that it is "the government's" responsibility to have an "energy policy"? If not for the USA's "policy" of not drilling anywhere near 1,000 miles of your backyard or boat dock we could be fairy self-sufficient. And the "policies" in oil-rich countries distort the energy markets. (Venezuelans are paying .15 per gallon for gasoline while their government subsidizes the difference? That is how Chavez came to power in the early '90s after the previous administration talked about letting energy prices rise.) |

While it'd be nice for the government to be more hands-off, I think this is impossible. I think it is important for the government to impose fuel-efficiency standards, which have proven to improve vehicle fuel economy (until the standard is met and car companies are not inclined to go any further). I think the government didn't act when it should have, letting the consumers dictate what kind of cars they want (behemoth SUV's and other miscellaneous gas guzzlers). Now we find ourselves with higher gas prices with vehicles with a bigger thirst for gas. Mass transit in most cities is terrible, and we have become accustomed to living far away from the workplace.
Overall, I think the government failed to encourage less wasteful practices, and most people were either oblivious or just didn't care. There was enough scientific evidence to indicate the need for change back then, and we might be getting a taste of that now. This is mostly in relationship to gas and oil, the whole problem is much bigger.

I'd be willing to vote Chavez in for a term here, if he'll subsidize us gas at .15 cents per gallon. Given our current slate of candidates, I think he would win in a landslide. Betcha that gas subsidy probably would'nt cost anymore than our current little exercise in nation building in the middle east either. But, I digress.
That oil belongs to those oil rich countries, and they can do whatever they want with it, which usually includes getting rich, and maintaining their hold on power. Chavez is operating just like a farm state senator here who just voted for our new farm bill. Speaking of goverment subsidies effecting the world markets, think of all our ag subsides. And stunts like paying farmers not to produce certain products. Think of the American midwest running at full capacity.....it would be as if opec doubled their oil output. |

| PR I think you made my point...exactly. Governments are not very adept at market manipulation but continue to do so for "other reasons". I doubt an outspoken person such as yourself would flourish under Chavez. |
