An accident in Laurel County involving a state police cruiser kills a bicyclist and sends the trooper to the hospital. The accident happened around 11:00 Sunday night on US 25, in front of South Laurel High School.
Investigators tell LEX 18, Trooper Christopher Roberts was driving behind another car that slammed on its brakes to avoid hitting two bicyclists. Police say the trooper swerved to the right to avoid rear-ending the car, but struck the side of the vehicle and one of the cyclists, 26-year old Chris Powers. Powers died at the scene.
The other cyclist, 26-year old Kevin Alshouse had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Trooper Roberts, a five year veteran of the Kentucky State Police was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
The accident remains under investigation.
