People can be rather condescending to bicyclists, especially if they feel uncomfortable for doing something stupid.
On Friday I had a lady cuss me out for not letting her in. I was in the center of the lane in a line of traffic that had just stopped for a light. I had room in front of me for cars wanting to turn into another parking lot on my left, but not enough for the SUV to turn in from across the road (due to the car in front of me). The driver had drifted out into the left lane and was blocking traffic. I guess I was an easy target, since the SUV couldn't have made the turn even if I hadn't been there.

Since I"m off the Mtb bike I've been putting in a lot of miles on the road bike, which is good times I must say, No i'm not a full blown roadie yet Koolaid. Anwyay I"m learning more and more on every ride and have ventured out from my end of town and went all the way to jeffersonville, IN via the road not the river walk. I find myself hogging the road and not giving too much room for cars push me up on curb especially if it's 2-3 lanes wide like 2nd or 3rd street. Going across the 2nd street bridge was kinda skeeeery but I made it. I'm really diggin the new C-dale and skinny tires. |

Mondays and Fridays can both be interesting. People are also bad when nearby expressways are clogged by accidents/bad traffic.

| I went road riding with a couple friends yesterday in southern Indiana. Holy crap was that an experience. My one friend with ADD could have passed for drunk and the other friend kept riding on the wrong side of the road, even if there was traffic. Seriously, guys...get off the road. Having said that, I'll probably ride with them again since we're friends (after all). |

This is a comment from someone about the story on WAVE's site. I showed her a little love with my comments and educated her on the LAW. "I also have seen some bikers not do a very good job of staying over on the side. They will weave back and forth then right as you are trying to pass them with a good amount of space in between you, they will start to accidentally veer towards you. What is the car driver to do? Some bikers don't even follow the rules of the road and will ride down the middle of the lane, don't wear a helmet (why don't we have mandatory helmets on bikes like other states have?), and things like that." |

One thing I hate is that it's almost always implied that bike accidents are the cyclist's fault. The news stations focus on how bicyclists can stay safe, which in itself is a good thing, but it doesn't quite go over the same way when it's paired with a story about a deadly accident. There's only so much cyclists can do. Car drivers have to take some responsibility for their reckless driving. On my afternoon commute I regularly see cars running red lights after my light turns green. Some drivers will pass bicycles no matter what, even with on-coming traffic. The sight of a cyclist will spur drivers to try to cut corners so they won't have to wait that extra 5 seconds. After commuting regularly for over a year, I've developed the ability to read drivers and can usually tell when they're going to do something stupid...but that only goes for those in front of me. I'm pretty defenseless from behind. |
