Hello all, I have a question concerning blood pressure med's...I was wondering what the best types of blood pressure meds are for people, like me, who partake in strenuous mountain bike rides...

I'm in the process of finding a good medication for my high blood pressure, since its been running high lately.  I'm looking at at adding either a Dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker or a non-Dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker.

I'm taking an angiotensin inhibitor and a diuretic right now, but those are not getting it down low enough.  I recently came off of a Toprol, a beta blocker because it was giving me bad side effects.

Unfortunately, high blood pressure runs in my family, so there is no easy way for me to escape it.  I hope I don't have to give up mountain biking because of it.

TWL may be the person to ask on this board. I'm assuming you are limiting your salt intake? How is your kidney function? The meds you are taking now are dependent on them.

I'm not an expert (interpretation: I'm really not qualified to give advice) but isn't exercise good for high blood pressure?  It might be a good excuse to go riding even more.  :p

Salt intake: I try to keep it low, but that's really impossible for anyone but a vegetarian in this society. I am trying to eat more fruits and vegetables, but its almost impossible with our present day food sources to have a really low salt diet.

Kidney function: I think my kidney function is OK as far as I know.

Exercise: Yes exercise is great. However, I have been putting off getting my high bp truly under control for years...mainly because I have been on the wrong medicines, namely Toprol, a beta blocker. So now, my situation has reached critical mass and I am trying to get my doctor to get off his arse and prescribe me the best med. So I am hesitant to go full bore on the mountain biking right now.....when I go I do easy 12 mile rides at cherokee about 2 or 3 times a week.
