Union College's Greg Gibson, (he was at Green River on the Felt) went down to the Ducktown 100 and did quite well. I believe 17th (not sure) but I'm sure the best part of that race was when he passed Floyd Landis at around the 80mile mark. Also big props for our very own "skirt ride" girl niki who placed in the top 20 at Sea Otter. It was cool to see "KY" in the from column. Way to go yall!

Yay!!! Those Union guys and girls are a class act, and it's always fun to mix it up with them on the collegiate season. [soapbox] Every year somebody from our conference makes a movement to take collegiate cycling out from under the auspices of USACycling and the National Collegiate Cycling Assn. and with the NCAA. A lot of schools' funding is contingent on a sport being with the NCAA, but doing so would prevent these athletes from racing regular-season NORBA events and sharing their good will. [/soapbox] Nevertheless, yay for Kentucky riders kicking butt. When I was chatting up people in chairlifts over spring break in Colorado, a few of them talked like our state was making a name for itself. Exciting business... |

| Jeff, could more schools could offer for-real scholarships if it was NCAA (You could always race NORBA events with a fake mustache)? If so, I would think that could help the sport in the long run. |

Point well taken, Mr. Slowinski. That seems to be esp. the case at larger schools, whereas small schools like Union and LWC choose cycling as something they're going to stand behind and support. IIRC, you probably know a thing or two about that from your days up at Michigan Tech. And there's no arguing that an athletic scholarship is a more reliable source of income than race payouts that could be ultimately contingent upon what sort of chain lube you use on race day. So yeah... hooray for local folks kicking butt! |

| That was Hughson at michigan tech, i helped run the totally unfunded by school dollars univ of cincinnati race team where we had to buy our own uni's cuz the basketball team needed 100 unis and shoes per scholarshiped player. But it is great that small schools like LW and Union can compete with the big schools. |

Union's coach is a real character, Chuck Coffee. He had a bike shop in Barbourville and I done business with him till he took the Union coaching job. Chuck was a real salesman he could sell a vampire a false teeth. Alway knocked a little of the price no matter what you bought and had a scratch and dent box with used parts that he would almost give away. My first mountain bike was a Cannondale. I rode it though some deep water and the reflector on the rear wheel got turned sideways due to the deep water. The reflector hit the seat stay and bent the wheel. Chuck called the Cannondale rep and got them to send me a new stronger rear wheel under warranty. It is great to see the small Kentucky school do good in something other than stick and ball sports. What is it with shop owners and coaching cycling teams? |

Mea culpa, Tony. As much as I sometimes loathe favoritism schools' AD's play towards the Big Three sports, you can't argue with the fact that those sports bring in more alumni pledges that benefit the students and institutions as a whole. Creep, if we put you up in Murray for a week and toured you around to the local trails, could you ask that last question to Steve repeatedly, and loudly, and repeatedly, and maybe convincingly? |
