Hickory Ridge here in Indiana is a prime example of a trail system gone bad. It's always been a horse destination but over the years has most likely become ane even bigger horse destination. It used to be rideable, now it's realy not (from what i've heard). |

I love long walks up mountains next to my bike... |

Tsali is open to horses and I ride there 2-3 times a year. I've never seen any major damage caused by horses. Maybe it's the soil or the upkeep?
I've ridden there in the Spring and hit a few "horse puddles" though. That's where horse crap mixes with standing water and then splashes up on your face. One more reason to dodge wet sections of trail! ;-D |

| Tsali's soil is a little different than around here (doesnt hold water as much) and I think the amount of mtb traffic has brought some of the horse #'s down. Could be wrong on point B, and soil may not be THAT different, but I wanted to say something and sound informed. |

The soil is WAY different there. Much higher concentration of sand. Drains water faster and is less moldable/holdable than silty/clay mud around cave run. Plus i would say that the trail system was a more sustainable design from the start.
Or their horses are just way lighter down there. Carbon fiber frames maybe. |

| It also seems like the majority of horsey users stay on Right Loop for some reason, although the soil is definitely more sandy there were a TON of deep bogs on Right loop last weekend from Horse damage, Thompson and Mouse were horse track free and fast fast fast, I think the equestrians definitely don't go there as much. |

Posted By chuck_clark on 07/07/2008 10:22 PM After endoing into a huge, nasty, smelly mudpit on a trail appropriately named Hogpen and later losing my shoe in the same mudpit trying to step out of it, I can attest to how bad those trails are in places. I just don't understand how the powers that be can turn a blind eye to the damage at their doorstep. Freaking amazing! I think if those trails were my only choice to ride, I'd be a Rico, I mean a roadie full-time. Or, start knitting..... Sorry Gonzo, Jim. I know the former is likely pulling his hair out about now. Chuck, no need to be sorry. I have pretty much became a full time roadie. After years of disgust and rage it just was not fun for me to be out there with those drunkin idiots anymore. I miss the trails but not the rednecks. Gonzo is still fighting the good fight but they beat me.

| If you need a racing fix on August 3rd, head to the Ohio/West Va race at Lake Hope. One of the best, fun, fast, flowing, no horse damage, courses anywhere. Isn't even that far from Cave Run, just north in South East Ohio. |

You just dont understand their love Oh, I understand it. Any man approximately his age (but not g*y ;-)) could be seduced by a 19 year old "woman". At least he waited until she was over 21 to make her honest.
The parts I don't understand are: 1) How stupid of a politician are you to think you can get away with it during a state-wide campaign (and he did!), and 2) How stupid the voters must be to not even raise a questioning eyebrow.
Yeah, I know, "it's Kentucky", etc. I am just embarassed by it.

No kidding. I saw them on one of the newscasts and one of them actually said "people might not understand us" awesome, anything else from the big book of cliché? Man, maybe I need to run for LT Gov, theyre always pullin the hotties, look at that fat blob Steve Henry. |

| I'm still fighting. These meetings get very entertaining at times. The end result will be segregation of trails. What trails will be bike/hike and what trails will be horse/hike is yet to be determined. The last meeting was when each user group submitted their proposals for trail segregation. The Mountain Bikers was divided up according to the trails that could take heavy horse traffic, which was not a huge amount. (White Sulfur trail, Buck Creek trail, Leatherwood Loop, and Murder Branch) The rest was bike/hike trails. They did not like that proposal. Theirs was, well stupid. We got most of Caney Loop and shared Limestone/Sheltowee (across from the visitor center) and the rest they got. With their proposal they failed to cover the original problem of horses destroying the trails. I guess they're not destroyed if knowone else is allowed to use them. |

Gonzo, Any indication of what the forrest service thinks? It sounds like we are at odds with them which is not surprising. If the forrest service is just they will find a happy medium between the two plans. Of course I would love to see them just use the on MTbers purposed, but something tells me that is not going to happen. |

| Gonzo put it nicely when he said the meetings were entertaining. It's hard for me to sit through them. My first meeting was when all the groups met to walk a section of the Caney Loop. We saw one tire mark going into a huge horse pit and it just stopped. Someone points out the damage from the horses and then they point out the one bike mark that stopped because they couldn't even ride though the pit. The same person replied if the horses didn't make the pit the bike wouldn't have caused any damage. They even denied the Caney Loop being damaged after walking it. We were in the woods because you couldn't walk on the trail, but the trail was fine. I'm not going to attempt to answer your question about what the forest service would do. Oh yea, I would hate us meet the horse riders descending the Sheltowee across from the Visitors Center 25 to 30 mph bike on actual singletrack meets a crazy animal. Horses and bikes would be mangled all over the mountain. We couldn't pass there if we tried not to mention the trail was only 4 inches wide last year from them chipping the sides off. I have pics of that if you need them. |

Please inform the Forest Service of how you dislike your race being canceled because of the current conditions of the trails. mailroom_r8_daniel_boone@fs.fed.us |
