Looking for 1, 2, or 3 folks to team with at the Fig. Preferably someone with counseling skills to help me hook up on the rappell.
This thing is the real deal.
There's nothing sadder than a little old man lost in the woods. I know that ya'll would'nt want that on your conscience. |

I would need to get clearance from the tower, but before I ask... Marvin, are you up for this? |

I just got off the phone with FlyingSquirrell this morning. I'm in (and I probably should be comitted). Currently GregS and moi are going as a two man team. G-Man, you're welcome to join too. This race is a national qualifier for three and four man teams. I can tell ya straight up; we won't be that good, but it would give us a idea of how far off we were.(!) Up to two spots left with us slow guys. |

Ouch. Got the first 12 checkpoints (not all of them), and wandered back in in 11hr30min or so. Lived through the rappell. Probably the hardest thing for me, out of everything I try to do. Out on the ridgeline, we ran with several other teams for a couple of hours. There was another guy that was afraid of heights in the crew. I could'nt convince him to do the rappell. Don't know how he got back in from where we were. Greg S is either a tough guy, or he's crazy. Possibly a combination of the two. Fun stuff. |

I haven't heard anything about it, but it definitely wasn't at the Fig. They had a nice set up on the rappel, there was a guy with a separate rope using it as a safety belay from the top.

They were climbing at Global Village on Monday. I was at Lady Slipper (adjacent crag) that day. After we finished and were loading up the car, we could see them on route. We left and did not see the fall. After finsihing the climb they were doing, he was lowering his partner to the ground off of an old piece of webbing. The webbing broke and when she fell he was pulled off. http://www.redriverclimbing.com/viewtopic.php?t=10862 |

| I know next to nothing about climbing, and my fear of heights colors my perception of the sport. I might be on a rappell 2-3 times a year max, and that would only be due to adv racing. Still, all my gear is new, and relatively high quality. I can't imagine using old stuff. I understand that people leave stuff on route sometimes, but it still suprises me that knowledgeable folks would attach to webbing of unknown age. I hate it for them. Too young. |

After reading this my first thought was why wasn't he tied into the rock or on a separate tie in? My few experiences rock climbing, whenever you were belaying you had three tie in points while on the rock face. However my climbing knowledge is limited, I was always with much more experienced climbers than I (so maybe they were just being extra careful) and it looks like there is mixed climbing on some of these routes.
Knowing nothing about nothing, you hate to armchair quarterback. Regardless, it's a very sad indeed. |
