Heading down there for a family thing the week of July 4th. Are there any trails around the area? I mean ANY!!!

I'm not fat. That's a fuel tank for the love machine!!!

Rumor has it that a whole new batch of singletrack just got opened up to mtn bikes in the Northern tract of Cherokee NF. Might be worth some diggin or a phonecall to the ranger station. Other than that I think you have to go to Knoxville or over the mountains to Tsali/pisgah/dupont

That sucks. I'm only gonna be down there for 3 days for a mini-family reunion so I don't want to drive TOO far for a ride. I did find PAVED historic touring trail down around Gatlinburg called Cades Cove. I might check it out while I'm down there if that's my only option. I did read that the place is crawling with bears so it might make it interesting. LOL

The closest mtb trails are in Knoxville. Alot of the locals ride at Haw Ridge. Too much of hassle to attempt to drive in and out of pigeon forge (especially on weekeneds). The loop around cades cove is about 9-10 miles. On Wednesdays and Saturdays it is closed for auto traffic (open for bikes, and hikers) until 10:00am. Although this is no real distance from pigeon forge, you need to allow about 45mins of drive time to get there. Leave early on Saturdays; you don't want to get behind a winnebago on the road to cades cove. It could take awhile. The loop is rough pavent, and if you get out there early on a bike you can see all sorts of wildlife; bears are rare (duh) but there are tons of fallow deer, wild turkeys and such. Actually a nice ride. The cove loop runs counterclockwise. About 2 miles out from the parking lot there is a gravel road turning right (out of the loop, not into the loop) that has a usfs metal gate at the entrance. This is a gravel jeep road that goes to townsend. I think it's about 11 miles one way. It runs across a real pretty ridge line about halfway. Another decent place to roll some miles. Happy Trails. I've been to both Manhattan and Orlando recently, and still don't think either place is any more expensive than pigeon forge!

Most of the Smokies in this area was purchased by the federal goverment from logging companies. They owned vast tracts, and it was no problem to relocate any company owned towns that were involved. Cades Cove had been owned and occupied by private familes since the settlers first came over the mountains. During the creation of the park, these familes strongly resisted offers to sell, or to be relocated. Then one fine day when the TN legislature was in session, the TN National Guard rolled in and put the families and their belongings onto flatbed trucks and took them out of the cove. Not the finest day in the history of the park, that's for sure. Not mentioned much either.
