I hate to ruin the ambience around here by asking a cycling-related question, but I've been thinking about replacing the wheels on my Wahoo. Among other things, my current hubs are not rotor-compatable, and I'd like to upgrade to a set of wheels that will enable me to install mechanical disc brakes on it someday, something like Avid BB7's or somesuch.
Any ideas? They gotta be inexpensive. |

depending on what your definition of inexpensive is (we know you are a doc)....you will probably have to go with a hand built wheelset if you are not wanting to upgrade to disc brakes right away. you don't see many machine built wheelsets that have a rim brake surface if they have disc hubs (that i'm aware of). you can probably get a set of hope hubs built to a decent dt rim for the 3 to 4 hundred range possibly. or if your thinking a little nicer go with a dt 240 hub instead of the hope. i would think thats gonna be in the 600 hundred range. then for just a little more you get the instant ingagement systems that are actually pretty cool (i just got my first setup) with a king or a i9 hub. if you are wanting to do the upgrade together, i've heard some cool things about the easton wheels. |

| Um, my Wahoo cost $375. I'm thinking about wheels that are a bit more modest. I'm not a racer and I ride like a girly-man so I'm not real hard on wheels. I am over 200 lbs. |

I think performance sells an relatively inexpensive wheelset ($200 or so) that has both disc rotor mounts and machined sidewalls (use your conventional brakes untill you get discs). I'm thinking this is a mavic rim, I can't remember if they are mavic hubs or not. You can get on ebay and find new wheelsets with xt hubs in the $200 range. I'm currently running xt hubs with sun singletrack rims on my heckler. Front and rear complete was $190. These rims are too heavy for the xc race crowd (I guess, not me) but they are bombproof. Nothing beats this stuff valuewise. BB7's go for about half retail on ebay. Around $100 should get ya a complete set (front and rear, with rotors). Get the newest model year out (2009's may be out already). Happy trails. |

| yep i would go with the xt hubs as well in that case. i used to have a set of xt hubs built to a mavic tubless setup. think i bought it second hand but very lightly used for right around 2 hundred bucks. pretty bomb proof setup and if you ride enough to toast your freehub shimano free hubs are pretty easy to get at any bike shop. |

95 bucks
You won't find anything cheaper than these. I put a set on my wife's bike - heavy but very strong and true w/ great rims. You couldn't build a set yourself with brand name components this cheap. |

| At some point a new bike is the way to go-a complete upgrade from the wahoo. I bought a brand new 2001 model ti bike on ebay a few months ago for $717. I'd recommend an lx level bike at minimum, and an xt level ride as the best value/performance blend. |

TWL--just wait for some racer-wannabe to give up and you'll find a good wheelset for cheap. They litter the craiglists and ebays all the time. The Jenson deal is pretty good, but I have heard complaints about the Deore hubs. If you don't want to find some used ones, I would go to qbike.com a find a set of Sun Rhino-lites or WTB Dual Duty's pre-built with XT hubs. That is a good combo for price and sturdiness. Even if you have to get the center-lock hubs (shimano-compatible rotors only) you can find the 6-bolt adapters pretty cheap |

Thanks to all. Except Marvin. I'm reporting Marvin to the Humane Society. I'm not going into details, but it has to do with late night visits to the ER to get a gerbil extracted from.......aw, never mind. HIPAA laws won't let me go into anymore detail. |

| TWL, I got some used Mavic's (Crosslands I think) for about $125 for my 8 year old Marin. They are disc and rim brake compatible and pretty easy to find. |

I've always assumed that as I get older I'll just not want to ride much, but lately I think the opposite is true. I'm readking "Younger Next Year" and the book has convinced me I'll be ready for some serious racing at the age of 60.
There aren't many duallies on Craigslist right now but if I can't find a good used one. If anyone knows of a duallie 17.5 inch let me know.

My age has affected my mtb puchases; I'd love to be riding a new blur/superlight/heckler, but it's hard for me to rationalize that kind of coin on a bike purchase anymore. I might get in 7-8 mtb/adv races a year now. And I have one child left to (pre)pay college for!
Here's my deal; I don't want to be a poser either. Given my riding skills, a wal mart mtb would probably suffice. |

| Ride everybodys dualies until you find the model that you want. Then the right size. Then lurk on ebay (always worked for me), sooner (or later) one will eventually slip through at a decent price. |

What kind of complaints? Just curious. I might be having an issue with my rear Deore hub.

From mtbr, here is plenty to read. Some up, most down. http://www.mtbr.com/cat/tires-and-wheels/Hub/shimano/deore-m525-disc-hub/PRD_361202_127crx.aspx |

If a $5000 XC bike fell into my lap I'd ride it without remorse, even if the bike would never go over 8 MPH and I'd still dismount for any obstacle over 4 inches.
I'm old, dude, I'm old. I'd rather spend the money on a good quality bike than on a really plush fatty wagon.

You know, that sounds good. I think if I had a Nomad, I'd probably end up killing myself at Windrock. I just scored a new set of wtb disc somethings (supposedly their lightest xc wheelset) with skewers and kenda nevegals for $127.27 on ebay. The nevegals are my favorite all around tire, so it was really nice to get the tires in the deal. |
