How much seat time would you say you get per week on both the Mountain bike and road bike????
I don't own a road bike so my seat time is either trainer or Mountain bike.
I"m probably around 4 hours a week on a trainer and 4 -5 on the bike so I'm about 10 hours per week if I'm lucky. I feel like I'm not even close to the seat time most riders and racers are so I figured I'd ask and get a feel for how much time some of you really get to ride. |

Well...what are your goals? Are you racing? or are you biking to stay fit, lose weight? It would not be fair to throw numbers at you without knowing your goals. It all depends what level you are at. Even if you are competing at a high level, some weeks you could ride as much as 25-30hours and as little as 8-10 hours. My recommendation is to not let the general biking community give you personal input as to what is best for you or to influence the perspective of what you are capable of. You need to personalize your training on many variables, so opinions are just opinions. Most every one has an opinion to offer, but that doesn't mean you should allow them to influence your perspective of where you are or what you should be doing on a weekly basis. I used to race at the semi-pro level, was one of the top 3 in the Midwest for several years, as well as a Collegiate All-American (top 5 in the nation) for Lindsey Wilson College, back in the day. I dont say that to toot my horn, but just so you can put some credentials with some words on a screen. Before I upgraded to the Expert level I remember asking a top Expert in the area a racer sponsored by Fuji bikes named Joe Frisch. To me he was a God, he was so stinkin fast it was mind boggling. Joe's reply really rocked me and I had a hard time relating. He gave me a break down of his week. I dont remember the details, but the one thing I remember that has always stuck with me was on one day he did a 3.5 hr mtb ride. Man...I was like dude...I don't know if I will ever be able to match that schedule. I was super discouraged. Well a couple of years later, I was matching and surpassing his work load and Joe and I were battling it out at the front of the races and we got to be the best racing buddies. Getting fast and fit takes time, patience, discipline, sacrifice and dedication. You gradually build up your foundation and you build on that week after week, month after month, and year after year. Hopefully that helps. If you want direct input for what is right for you...provide some details of what your goals are and the time you have to give to training. God Speed! badger |

I forgot to add that my schedule only allows me to have about 10 hours a week. If I was single I'd put in a lot more hours but that is not an option, again I'm lucky to get 10 hours of riding a week.
I'm just curious as to how much time other people on the site get to actually ride their bike.
and I'm a wanna be racer in the sport class. |

I'm only able to get in about 5 hours of saddle time per week. Anymore and my kids would forget me, my wife would leave me, and my body would hate me. I'd like to be compete at the sport level and have fun not just be miserable. lol |

Glad to hear that some people have there priorities straight. I really respect that. I put racing on the back burner after competing for several years at a high level. It demanded a lot out of me and my family. I had most all my racing expenses paid for but it was not paying the bills. I had to make a decision to put my family first and did so. My kids are now older and are starting to take a real interest in cycling...yippee! This has stirred up my own desire to bump up my riding a little. In the past few yrs I have done very very little riding. I think my longest ride has been 2 hours and that was only a couple of times last summer. I now commute to work a 2-4 days a week with a whopping 5 miles to and 5 miles back, with a total ride time per day of 30 minutes. So, if I did actually ride all 5 days which is not very often, I would cloack a total of 5 hours a week. Thats all the riding I have done. With that said, I have decided to jump into the Youngers Time trial this weekend. I am jacked about it. I know it is going to be painful with my total lack of preparation, but hey it's only 5 miles. I will also be riding my dumpster commuter fully rigid Jamid Dragon circa '98 bike where I can only use my 46 tooth big ring because my middle is worn out....should make for some fun nonetheless and I will suffer no doubt! I am just looking forward to hitting the trail. I havent been offroad since last Sept...I think. I have heard Youngers trails really rock. You guys posting here going to head down there?

I'm riding about 15 hours a week right now including racing. It's a lot for me and takes planning and coordination with my wife (who also rides and races) and the kids (ballet, soccer, etc). I think badger's points are spot on. I know a lot of guys who'll ride 20 hours a week but about half of them are just "junk miles". They could be more targeted and work on specific goals (fitness, climbing, weight loss, etc) in less time of with cross training. That said, I feel lucky to have that much time in my busy schedule to ride and race as much as I do. |

| The few times I do get on the trails I do a 15 -20 min warm up then hammer down until I'm about to puke the rest of the time. The other day I took a change of pace and did a 2 hour smooth slow ride at waverly and actually had a good time. I forget sometimes to slow down and smell the roses. |

yep...thats me anthony. Look forward to being on the dirt, trees wizzing, and heart rate pinned. You definitely wont be seeing me at the front with you fast guys anytime soon. Dont plan on racing at the caliber anytime soon, just out to have some fun.
Great to know that someone out there remembers the badger ghost from the past.
I know you have had some time in the saddle this winter/spring. Hopefully you got some big goals this year...you are such a fast, capable racer, I always loved your professionalism and enjoyed racing with you.
Keep rocking brother..plan to see you at the top of the standing in the Pro race...some good cash up for grabs make sure you dont leave any on the table! |

| I feel pretty lucky to get 4:30 a week!! No wonder i cant keep up in the sport class with guys riding 10 hours a week or more. Sheesh. Makes me wonder, IF one rides "X' amount of hours a week, what class should one be competing? Just keep beatin' up the same ole guys year after year, and then train more to beat even more. No wonder XC racing is not so popular anymore, who can ride (train) (twain - Elmer fud) like that? I would rather have the respect of my kids than my cycling peers, so i shall stay at my palsly 4 and half hours a week and eat your golden dust (well, that is wrong, i am so far behind the dust has settled, better for my lungs. See ya Sunday! |

I watched XC racing have it's big surge in the 90's then there seemed to be a generation gap of riders getting in to "freeride" now that all those riders are maturing the XC and Endurance XC is back and getting stronger than before. |

| I think the sport class of today would have kicked the sport class of your day's butt rusty. Back when you were getting into it did sport class guys actually train or did they just ride quite a bit? |

| I got in 3 hours and 15 minutes of seat time today. Dave Hays and I rode and since I have just started riding again. He had to ride "REAL" slow so I wouldn't fall behind. 4 miles from the end of the ride he was yawning and about to fall asleep. |
