Some friends and I are planning a 4-day trip to either Tsali or Pisgah this summer.  We've never been to either place.
Two questions:
1.  Which would be better for biking?
2.  Which location would be better for our wives who don't bike?  Which has more to offer the non-mountain biking crowd?

They are close enough, do both.

good point. I guess I'm wondering which would be better to stay near given that half of our party won't ride.

Leave that half at home and do both.

c'mon anthony, they're wives, they like to sit around cackling like a bunch of hens, talking about make-up, clothes, and brad pitt's butt in that movie about trojans.

What's the difference? Outlets/Malls, they're all the same. I'm with Rico, leave 'em home and rent them some Brad Pitt movies.

Wives will like Tsali cause it is boring, flat and easy.

Wives will hate pisgah because there is a lot of climbing and unless you are with a local who knows the trail, you have no idea where you are except that you are on cool trail and you hope it doesn't dead end into a bush. Fortunately you won't see anyone to ask directions so you don't have to take the heat for not doing so.

I started to hate Pisgah for a few minutes when we were 4 hours in and 4 more hours from the car and I ran out of water and food.
But it was cool, you can't really hate Pisgah...

Something a little bigger than you thought you were going to do? You can get hurt in Pisgah without even trying. Lots of long climbs and even longer trails........

I love long walks up mountains next to my bike...

We did the South Mills river to Black mountain and back on Turkey Pen, one of the "Mountain Goat Epics". It was the dead of summer and I guess I should have had a bigger camelback or something.

Pisgah is the better choice for both. Pisgah has, in my opinion, has better biking. You will run out of trails for 4 days. Tsali is out in the middle of know where. Not much for the non-biking person. Pisgah has Brevard, NC. It has food and shopping plus it has something like 1000 waterfalls.

Take a good map and an even better guidebook, be ready to do some hiking with your bike on your back, pay close attention to trail markers and if you see an electrical storm blowing in off a distant horizon, don't try to squeak in that quick 5 mile loop. You will lose, you might die and the trails will still be there later - go get some beers and get cozy with a John Krackauer book. You can ride the trails some other time. Trust me on this one.
