| Looking to get out this week/weekend. Are any of the Louisville area trails going to be dry enough with all the rain we've had lately? Otherwise I guess it'll back to the Bernheim Hike-Bike Trail AGAIN! Getting tired of gravel, fire-road type trails... |

| Havent been to duff in a while, but i would think that or wave would be ok wed afternoon. you need to weigh about 2000lbs and have 4 hole diggers for legs to ride iroqouis. |

| whoa You have been riding the trails at Bernheim? Not to sound like the trail police but last I checked they did not allow bikes on the trails. I hope they do since I work 1/2 mile from Bernheim Forest. |

Bernheim has one bike trail, the aptly named "Haike-Bike Trail". It's actually located outside of the park's main gates. To get there you drive past the Bernheim entrance (which will be on your right if you are coming from I-65), and take a left down the driveway that leads to the Jim Beam distillery. There's a gravel parking lot on the right about 50 feet down, and that lot is the trailhead for the Hike-Bike trail. It's nothing spectacular as far as MTB trails go- 3.5 miles of gentle rolling hills that traverses gravel pathway (about wide enough for a golf cart) and old, no longer used highway. I'd say half the trail is gravel, the other half is blacktop, albeit the blacktop is cracked and overgrown. It's a section of two-lane highway that was closed when the newer highway (which it parralels) was put in. There are a few climbs, but nothing lung-burning or major by any means. It is an out-and-back, not a loop. The first half criss-crosses through hardwoods and pines with two 15 pedestrian bridges that span the creek. The second half (the old road) roughly follows alongside the current highway, about 45 feet in.
I've got some Garmin files of the trail if you want to throw it in Google Earth. It's a fun family ride. My ife rides her rigid hybrid bike, while I ride my hardtail and pull my 4yo on his trail-a-bike, and his 1 yo brother who rides in his trailer. Yes you are reading that right. Baby trailer connects to trail-a-bike which connects to my MTB. It adds a little something to the ride for conditioning!

Anyone up for some lunchtime riding tomorrow? I plan on brining my bike to work and riding Cherokee during lunch (~11am to 2pm, I'm flexible). I am leaving Louisville on the 25th to relocate back to Cincinnati. Suffice it to say, working for Humana sucked. Ok, that's not fair. Working for my idiot boss who suffers from a major case of Napoleon Complex sucked. All in all, Humana itself wasn't too bad.
Anyway, I ditched the FR/skatepark stuff and now ride purely XC. Come on out, hell- it's not like I care if I get back to work on time... ah, Short-timer status rawks! |

| Cherokee was in great shape Tuesday afternoon. The puddles on the Wilderness Loop will still be there till late May/early June. Otherwise, ride before Friday (next rain) if you can. |

Well I got out there and rode Cherokee around 1pm today. To be honest, I'm not sure where I was. I mean I know I was in Cherokee, but which "trail" it was- I haven't a clue. I came into the park at the intersection of Lexington and Grinstead (having pedaled from Humana on Main downtown to Cherokee via Market>Main>Spring>then onto the Beargass Bike trail). Took a left, passed a lake on my right, then into a parking lot (where I was eyed by a guy in his car... he grinned at me too long for my likeing, yuck), then down the road into the park proper. Kind of took an illegal left at the interesection by the big rockwall/display thingy and road the bike lane opposite of the one-way street signs (hope those are only for cars!). Passed the archery field on my left, went over a bridge and saw a trailhead marker 20 feet ahead and hit it. Followed it all the way till it came out to a road, and although it appeared to continue on after crossing the road, I only had a half an hour left so I turned around and proceeded to ride the same trail in the opposite direction. The trail(s) were in great shape aside from one spot near a very small stagnant pond. There was a mass of muddle there, and the reroute was a tunneled mass of low hanging honeysuckle branches.
I must amitt I felt kind of lucky this time! I've ridden this trail a few times before but it always seemed REALLY short, so I guess I was zigging when I should have been zagging. What I'm saying is that apparently I took the right path this time instead of effectively pedalling around in a convoluted circle (thankfully someone has been trying to close those "other" trail-connecting-branches). All in all it was a nice lunch-break ride. Felt really good to be able to commute to the trailhead by bike rather than drive there. Only lost it once, but that was me trying to accomodate two other riders who were just coming *in* to the trail (at the trailhead) after I rode it one way and was about to exit coming the *other*.
First real MTB trail on my 820 and I continue to be enamoured with my cheapo Trek (ok- drivetrain still blows goats, but 'm talking more about the frame and fit). It's a majorly positive change from trying to ride XC trails on my SS freeride tank. Also my first significant MTB trail with clipless pedals. Takes some getting used to, but already seeing the benefits!

Just a Google Map follow up- apparently I entered the park via Ledge Road, took a left onto Scenic Loop (going the opposite direction), passed Cochran Hill, and entered the trail around where Scenic Loop meets up with Beals Branch Road.
I then road this trail until it came out on Maple Road, at which point I turned around and road the whole thing over again in the opposite direction. Definately more fun going the Maple-to-Scenic Loop direction (my second leg of today's ride)!
