| I totally agree z. If they could see what Brown Co has done and the benefits it has on the park as a whole......well, if they could only see. |

| If you tell them that it would be a great place to ride electric cars (and you have to tell "them" in the next 5 days or so) there might be a shot... |

| What's really funny is that the trails at Taylorsville were abandoned by MTBers a few years ago and now that the Equestrian community is actually creating new trails in the area this thread pops about what we can do to step in and "get involved" while we trash the equestrian crowd. You all get bent out of shape when equestrians encroach on MTB trails, but there is an elitist attitude that all trails (even those specifically for horses) need to be MTB accessible. C'mon...give it a break already. |

They abandoned the Taylorsville trails after equestrians started riding them because horse hoofs make mtb trails unfun. Same thing is happening at cave run, nobody from lexington that I talk to really bothers driving out there anymore because horses have ruined the trails.

Re-read the post, Roberto...most are bashing the equestrian crowd; suggesting to complain to the paper; talking about how to make new trails; etc... If I missed the point, you missed the message. |

this is how the person who suggested writing to the paper feels about the trails. Meaning, he doesn't want access to horse trails. What everyone wants is to build a seperate trail out there for bikes and hikes, not to encroach upon the crater filled horse trails.
I don't argue about the equestrian bashing, I'm just arguing with the part of your comment that I quoted. That's why I quoted a specific part of your post and not the whole thing. |

| The Spencer County Trails Foundation got a grant - I believe for 150K - to fix the existing and develop new trails. They are trying to make everything truly multi-use and have designed all of the new trail to very sustainable standards, but nothing has been built yet. I can't say I fault anyone for not wanting to help build trail that may not last a year, but the group spearheading the whole effort has gone out of their way to be inclusive. I met with them a number of times during the application process and they are definitely hoping to make something for everyone, however, I'm still not clear on how the trails will be managed over the long term. I may take a little scouting trip once they start flagging routes and getting ready to cut trail - will keep everyone posted. |

Now, Rowbare, a single quote does not support the theme you are attempting to portray.
At first I was going to mention russell g's comment as a positive note, but then he fell into "I hate horses" trap and started talking about voicing your opinion to the paper and writing bad reviews on trails.com.
Posted By russell g on 08/05/2008 8:12 PM
Just went to trails.com
and posted a bad review for Taylorsville lake. I advise you do the
same. The more pressure the better. I wouldn't do one minute of work
out there until something is in writing guaranteeing a trail that does
not and will not allow horses. My point, was that nobody gave a crap about Taylorsville until a story is published about the trails being expanded by the horseback riders. With that, it instantly becomes the latest plight of our existence and the newest area to forge new trails and "take back" the area as a MTB destination. I think you chimed in on this one, about it being closer to Central Kentucky than IN before you were reminded that as a non-Louisvillian, your input didn't matter.
Again, all I'm saying is that the MTB reactions to anything involving trails + horses (even if we aren't impacted at all) are getting ridiculous. Just have fun and love your neighbor even if they have hooves.

| I posted a bad review on trails.com that said the trails were great if youre a horse. Also to start some talk to include bike/hike trails. The 150K grant is just as much our money as it is horse money. We really have to drive home the point that horses and bikes on the same trail simply does not work, at least not on the soil at taylorsville. We (kymba) have been burned before on (multi-use) trails. I don't want to see it happen again. As far as horse bashing goes, we all know that horseback riding does absolutely nothing but ruin the landscape. To me they are worse than ATV's but that's just my opinion. I tried to keep the comments to the paper and the trail site positive and not to upset our 4 legged posthole group. Sometimes we have to get a little vocal to make things happen. |

Posted By russell g on 08/06/2008 2:56 PM The 150K grant is just as much our money as it is horse money. That's a pretty bold statement. If we as an organization walked away from Taylorsville and have not been contributing to the economic stimulation of their economy as the horses have, we don't automatically deserve an equal slice of the money pie. Additionally, I'm sure that the Spencer County Trails Foundation requested the grant money to improve and increase trail access for those that actually use the trails and spend their money in that area.
I applaud their inclusion of KyMBA and Dulin in the planning process, but I still don't see us "deserving" anything more than the access they want to give. I think we should view this as an opportunity to support their vision in an area that we don't have any current investment and focus our efforts on preventing the encroachment on other areas in which we have more to lose.
The reality is that we are the little dog in this fight and all the yapping and snarling won't get you a doggie biscuit. Those go to the calm, subservient and obedient dogs. Dulin is definitely a calm and loyal labrador as opposed to some of his predecessors that more resembled the ankle-biter breeds. His thoughtful and curteous approach has had extremely positive results that are clearly evident with the progress made with Metro Parks. Follow his lead and we will flourish...run counter to the pack and we only threaten ourselves.
This editorial opinion is not meant to malign any person or collective, but rather to cast a harsh light on our myopic righteousness when it comes to getting what we "deserve". Peace, my brothers and sisters.

Posted By zherz on 08/06/2008 10:01 AM My problem with building anything at T-ville lake is that it is in "good ole boy" land. Where I'm afraid horses would never be regulated or penalized for riding trails they were not allowed on. If any new trail goes in around here I would rather we all push for JMF. We need to start storming those meetings in hordes. I always had the idea to push having them gives us one area ,like horine, where the trails are horridly steep fall lines, do the work ,and to sweeten the deal for Met.parks make it pass only accessable. Annual or daily passes. I would buy a $10 annual pass to have access to some new JMF trails. Think of the events you could hold if we were to have Horine. There's camping, facilities, plenty of open space and all with in 15 minutes of downtown. Man it would be sick. It could be THE mecca for this area.
The biggest limiting factor mountain biking in the area is not the a lack of support from government agencies, it is not the lack of available parks. We have plenty from both really. It is the lack of involvement by Mountain bikers in the area that has stunted the growth of new trails and new areas to ride. This area has huge potential to be a regional draw given the trails we already have and the potential trails that have yet to be built. We could have at least 100 miles of single track with in a forty minute drive of Downtown Louisville. It isn’t ever going to happen unless we have more involvement out side of the this forum.
Some of us have been Storming the Meetings for JMF. We would love to have more show up, we post the meetings on here and people show little interest in coming. People seem to like to post in here about what they want and what we don’t have, but that is the extent of their involvement. I’m sorry but that is just the straight up truth. There is no reason we shouldn’t have 30 people showing up for these meetings. It not like they happen once a month, it more like once a quarter.
Our commitment doesn’t end with the meetings. There is a lot of steep side slopes at JMF. A lot of the areas are too steep for even the dingo. That means it is going to take a lot of man power to build trails in the forrest. If we promises volunteer work we have to prove that we can come up with the volunteers. Right now we are not doing a very good job of that. The same people who over see JMF over see Waverly. It is safe to say they will have input into what happens at JMF. They have seen the poor turn out we have had at every trail day this year at Waverly. It is going to take a lot more than 4 or 5 people to build trails in JMF. We have to prove to them that we can provide what we promise. More importantly it is once we get access to an area, the trails are going have to be built. What exist in the forest today is nothing that you would want to ride a bike on. We are probably going to be the ones to build them. A big part of the advocacy to get more access is what we do with the areas we already have access to. We really need to show more enthusiasm for those areas we have by showing up in large numbers for trail days.
You guys should really come out to the next trail day we have at O’bannon, you will be supremely impressed with the potential the place has. It is some of the most varied terrain I have ever seen in this area. So far the biggest trail day we have had we had 4 people come. The management there wants Mountain bikers, they want this because they have seen brown county and they want that to be duplicated, 40 minutes out side of Louisville.

Horses and bikes don't mix? Really? http://www.main.nc.us/graham/hiking/tsali.html Also, are the trail options in Kentucky so wide that you can shun an option without investigation? It is easy to complain, not so easy to take action to make a difference, kudos to those taking a positive look at the options. |

| I know I made some negative comments about equestrians and stand behind those comments. What I would like to clarify is that I'm not interested in riding on an equestrian trail or advocating that they be kicked out of an area. What I am advocating which I think a lot of others have advocated is that we build new and seperate trails. The trail chuck and them built several years ago at Taylorsville was sustainable, but yet it didn't hold up to one day of equestrain use. I would help with Bike and HIke trails but have not interest in working on a trail that an equestrian uses. There is good reason for the bashing, the trails they ride on are un rideable and not fun. They even had to cancel race because of it. |

Might as well jump into this as a first post... I completely agree with anyone who doesn't want to put the time and effort into ANY trail that will be shared with horses. It's great if they happen to intersect, but not even hikers enjoy the trails that horses have trod through on post rainy days. They stick to MTB trails, why? Because they aren't torn up, you won't find piles of horse dung (which have caused SERIOUS health issues... ) and there aren't 1000+ ways to turn an ankle. That said, if there isn't a presence of MTBers at multi-use trail parks, the appropriated money does not end up in their corner 9 times out of 10. It's happened in Illinois, as i'm sure elsewhere. I'm new to E-town (i guess that counts as Louisville area) and would love to get involved in the local MTB scene. I've been told to visit KyMBA.org, and can't make heads or tails of that site, so found KyMBA here. It may help to have a more coherent method of communicating to newer riders/locals without having to navigate a maze just to find one topic that can lead them in the right direction. Kudos to a guy who introduced himself to my wife and I last week. Scott or Steve? You were riding with a guy named Tim? Anybody?....You're right... Otter Creek is not beginner friendly... but fun! |

Isn't there enough acreage for us both? If so, let's move forward with separate trails...I mean horses get spooked by bikes moving up too quick anyway so I don't think they want to necessarily share trails either... If we can work WITH them...to build separate trails, but maybe share a parking lot and a cup of coffee, maybe we CAN learn to pitch in and help each other out...who knows...we certainly won't unless we try... Who knows...maybe we can convert some horses over to bike riders...yes! horse riding a Trek Fuel! snap! I rode in NC last weekend amongst the pine trees...and ummm...I don't know how rough equestrian trails are...but pine tree roots?.... gggeeezzzeee.... I just had my seat surgically removed from my ass this morning! And not because I was playing some stupid SM game either! Go Mr. Dulin! |

| From what I have been told the Taylorsville Land management is not interested in two separate trail systems, they want to build one Multi Use system. Mike correct me if am wrong on this. |
