This has'nt been my favorite May. About all I've done is work my a## off, and go to funerals. When I could get outside on a mtb, it's been raining and cold.
But here a few minutes ago UPS brought me in a new bike. A ebay baby. That I bought sight unseen, never having ridden one. (Going against all my new bike advice on here a few days ago.) It's a spiffy new 2001 model. Damn if it does'nt look kinda cute too.
I feel better already. If I can find any metric allens in the Mckee metro area, I may just quit working and start screwing the thing together.
Man, I just noticed, the sun is shining outside too. |

Close enough. It's an airborne lancaster. It looks like me and Rico set up a jig in my garage, and welded the thing ourself. I'm guessing just under 24lbs currently. I'm a fs guy, and have been for years. Jackson County lends itself to big travel fs bikes. But about three years ago I bought a litespeed obed. It's like a 22lb rolex. And I rediscovered hardtails again. Not for STree, or Turkeyfoot, but for the lake trail, haw ridge, and cap view.
Litespeeds probably have the shortest top tube length/frame size ratio in the mtb industry. They're short (lengthwise), and blazingly quick steering. They'll put ya on the ground fast too. After the Lynskys' sold the company, the bikes got alittle longer (probably around 2000 or so), but not that much.
The obed is a 16". 16" c to c from the bb to the seattube/toptube junction. The effective top tube length (c to c) is 21 and 1/2". That's too short, and too quick for me. I'm not a big fan of unplanned nose wheelies at speed. So, I've been looking around for another ti frame. (About a year.)
Airbornes' fit is totally on the other side of the spectrum. They have a long cockpit. My new arrival is an airborne 18". It's about 16" c to c from the bb to the top tube junction (just like a 16" model litespeed), the 18" measurement on an airborne is from the center of the bb to the top of the seattube mast (not the seattube/ top tube junction). But here's the difference; the effective toptube length on the airborne is 24". 2 and 1/2" longer, with the same standover height.
For me, the difference is amazing. I feel much better at speed. What speed I have left. If money was no object, I'd be racing a brand new blur or superlight. But money is an object, and I don't race enough to justify such a ride anymore. I picked up the bike for $717.17 complete. Lx cranks, and Xt drivetrain. And welds by Rico and Paul. My son will get the litespeed. That thing will stand with any hardtail currently produced. Daddy gets the airborne. |
