Does anyone know what is going on with the proposed cyclocross park on River Road?  I know they have been racing on the old River Road Country Club. However, I seem to recall that a new park was proposed closer to downtown.  But someone was going to have to help fund it.  Who that someone is and how they are coming along is a mystery.

IIRC - the USGP will be held at the same location (RR Country Club) this year. It was the following year when the RRCC would be turned into something else (more soccer fields I think) and a dedicated CX course was discussed closer to downtown.

I think the property near Frankfort Ave and River Road was being discussed. At one point (USGP) there were plans for it.

Brad Swope knows more about this than I do...calling Brad!

Also - the OVCX guys are coming on board with us now so I'm sure you can find out more about this in their community.

There had been some serious talk about using the old landfill site for the development of a "bike park" environment. We put together a design that included a free-ride & stunt area, a dirt-jump/ pump track area, a competition-specific, cross-country mtb track and a venue for cyclocross. Metro Government has supported the concept and would be willing to work with the cycling community on the development, but at this point it's still just talk. We had shown the bike park concept as occupying not just the landfill, but on all the land between the Edith Ave Soccer Park and Frankfort Ave. Currently, it's a mix of homeless camps, old woodlands, railroad corridors and open fields (and of course, the landfill). Its location makes it a sweet, central spot for events - and you can access it easily from Clifton, River Road and Downtown, but it isn't all Metro-owned property and any development - cycling, soccer, bocce, lawn darts, dwarf tossing - would cost a bit of money (hence the fundraising aspect)

As for cross, over the next couple of years, the River Road Country Club site will be re-developed as a park, and while the new park will include a bunch of stuff like dog runs and bathrooms and sports fields, it looks like the areas we use for cross racing will be OK. (there is a proposed site plan hanging in the window of the old golf cart shed at RRCC) We'll keep everyone posted as we learn more, but at this point, the best thing we can do is keep growing the scene. More participants means better chance of getting all of this cycling-specific stuff dialed in.

I will have to check out that map. Might ride there this week since it suppose to rain. It is my understanding you can ride the course ever if it is muddy, true?  Also that is if I can still see the course.

Thats true. They hold weekly CX rides there for kids so I'm sure the course(s) are prolly still pretty visable.

Plan on checking it on Saturday. If there are no thunderstorms.

When do they have these rides for the kids? I wouldn't mind the drive if I could take my daughter and make a day of it.

Rider -
The plan was to have kids cross practice every Friday evening, but believe it or not, every Friday since it was to begin in April has been rained out (except maybe 2)! So, the next scheduled kids cross practice is Friday, May 30th. I would consider joining the OVCX yahoo mailing list to be able to receive the emails that are sent out about cx in the area.
