I know there are resources online for selecting the best gear ratio for single speed, but I wondered what ratio people are running on their current set-up? If you've been riding SS a while have you changed the ratio over time?

i've been running 2:1 (36:18) on my ss. wheel size will matter... this is for 26" wheels. works good for otter creek, waverly, duffield and cherokee.

When I was on 26" wheels, I ran one tooth easier than 2:1 (eg. 34x18 or 32x17). Worked very well on ledgy, rooty spots and I didn't miss the higher gearing. Now that I am on a 29er, I actually run 34x20 which puts me in about the same gear. |

| My one rig has 32:18, but I can't climb for anything (too fat, too out of shape, etc). Plus, that gearing works perfectly on that frame with vertical dropouts and no tensioner. My KHS Solo One has 33:16, which I can definitely tell a difference. I've only taken it on the Wilderness Loop and Cherokee Park. |

| I recently converted over to SS and a shop set me up at 32:14 which seems a little too tough for XC. I asked for 32:16, but they thought otherwise so I have tried it out a few times, but think I'm going to go back and ask for the switch. |
