That couple is totally insane. Blaming the rider for being in the wrong place at the wrong time??? It's his fault because he was 40 miles away from his home? LOL Thanks for the laugh, chuckles.

How far is the proper distance to ride from my house?  What if somebody backs out of their driveway and I hit them?  Should I carry a large amount of cash to pay for the damages on the spot?  Nobody informed me of these thing when I got a road bike.

That couple's argument was funny.  It was obvious that their dog caused the accident and they were trying everyway they could think of to avoid saying they were responsibile.
