I heard on the news that there will be a rally at Otter Creek, this Sunday at 2 pm, that will be attended by the media. CAN ANYONE CONFIRM THIS?. Now that our cathartic complaining seems to have waned this would be the perfect time to put our words into action and gather family and friends to demonstrate our support for this cause. This is where the rubber meets the trail.
To my suprise there have been numerous stories about the park closing on various channels so perhaps it is important to more people then I had frst thought. This is the tip of the spear and our time to make sure that those involved know that there are a lot of people that take this seriously.
Once again, does anyone have any more information about this rally?

If the KY Department of Fish and Wildlife is interested in the property, as reported in the C-J, it might actually be a good thing. Big chunks of undeveloped land are hard to come by, and the Fish and Wildlife people like grab opportunities like this when they have the chance (if they have the money). I'm not sure how much hunting would be allowed in the park, but most major hunting seasons fall on times that are not prime times for riding. It might be more like the Taylorsville WMA where bow hunting is allowed, but more powerful rifles can only really be used during quota hunts, which only occupy a few weekends.
To develop the land would be disastrous. I'd much rather let the park sit there unused than get developed.

| If F&W gets it, it will become a Wildlife Management Area and there is no Biking, horsey riding allowed in those...hiking/hunting only, that would be bad news in my opinion. |

| Not sure where that is but the word I have always gotten from the head of F&W is that biking, atvs, horses are all no-no's in an official WMA. |

It's down near Laurel Lake. The Sheltowee Trace goes right through it. The Rockcastle Narrows East Trail and Winding Stair Gap are two other trails in the WMA that are Hike/Bike (according to the DBNF website).

I think they could make an exception for OCP if they really wanted to, especially in light of the Cross Kentucky Trails program that the state is championing: http://www.kentuckytourism.com/outdoors/ The deer are pretty thick in Otter, hunting may actually help IMO. |

I'll be at the meeting for SURE! Also, with regards to hunting. The woodland around Otter Creek is THICK with hunters. I DO NOT think hunting should be allowed at Otter Creek. It's a refuge of sorts. That, plus the animals within Otter Creek are fairly used to people. It wouldn't be fair to allow hunters to come in after decades of animals seeing people that haven't harmed them and have developed a fairly high tolerance for people. |

| There were a couple familiar faces there - Vince, Mike, Chris, Mark, Pat B - and a couple guys I hadn't met before today. We should have traded cell phone numbers before we all went down. It looked like a really good turnout, overall, though. Good mix of people - certainly encouraging. |

There was a group of us there, sans bikes. Below 40 is too cold for me, although yesterday could have proved the exception. Beautiful day! Yes, the turnout was encouraging as I had expected only a handfull of people. By my estimate there was 250 to 300 people there. I had hoped for a little more organization but just being there for the camera's was a good thing. I hope this effort doesn't wither away and that perhaps a more organized effort to save the park comes from this??? I HAD HEARD THAT THERE WAS A WEB SITE OR FACE BOOK AS A CENTRAL MEETING PLACE FOR THIS. ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT? |

I don't want to divert this string, but I have personally heard it both ways as reguards mtb access through cane creek. I've also gotten lost trying to find my way through cane creek to the parkway.

| I was one of those guys at the Saturday ride that no one knew. I heard about the ride on this forum and decided to show up and meet the community. It would be a shame to meet everyone and now not have a local place to ride!!! I just attended a meeting at Fort Knox where the Fort Knox officials stated they had an interest in the park, but they have decided not to pursue an aquisition of the park because they don't feel it can turn a profit. So, it looks like it will be up to the state. The only thing I can say is that we have to make sure our state representatives hear our voices. |
