| A decade ago my older daughters were serious competitive equestriennes. The most exciting part of the competition was the XC stage where they took out on a 2-3 mile course interspersed with large immovable jumps. If you had no responsibilities you couldn't watch much of it, but if you were a member of the 'crew' as I always was, you could only see the first ten seconds and the last 15.
So there were some enterprising souls with video cameras stationed around the course. You'd pay them around $50 or so and they would compile clips of your child risking their lives on the course. They'd send you the tape (VHS format!) about six weeks later. They were pretty cool. You could see your girl handle most of the jumps on the course.
I got a new IMac for Xmas and have been playing around with the video capabilities. I don't own a camcorder, so I've taken old footage shot with digital compact cameras and tossed them together. I'm amazed how easy it is to do once you get the hang of it. My first ever You-tube submission is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPv-4ey9QRk
The footage is about two years old and not intended to be anything other than a first try.
What I'm saying is that if you rounded up a bunch of camcorders, positioned sharp-eyed yahoos strategically about an XC course, dumped the footage onto an IMac, and rearranged the footage creatively, you could generate a pretty decent video that focused in on the racer.
The expensive part of the enterprise would be all the legal stuff: registering the business, obeying all the copywrite laws, paying taxes, etc etc.
But the job itself wouldn't be that hard, I don't think.
My biggest question would be who would pay how much for what. With people dickering about whether they have to pay an extra $5 for their registration, I'm thinking that some folks would not be too willing to part with $50 for their video Kodak moment.
But I'm saying it would work. What do ya think?

| I think the hole in your business model lies somewhere between the available re$ource$ for equestrians vs. mountain bikers. |

Hey Andy, welcome out of the darkness! The more you learn about mac, the more you'll realize it is the computer for creativity. I use imovie a lot, and have even purchased Final Cut Express, which is a much more professional movie editor than imovie, but also takes a lot longer to get the hang of, unless you're 17... That being said, I've got this handlie little contraption called "Dazzle" by Pinnacle software. It plugs into your Mac's USB port and then to your VCR and converts your old VCR tapes into digital files that you can edit and compile using imovie. I have already converted all my old stuff to digital so if you want to borrow it let me know.... Congrats, and have fun! BL |

Heck yeah I'd like to borrow it. BTW, did you post a video of you and your daughter riding Cherokee a couple of days after the big blow on You Tube? |

Why yes I did! It was quite an adventure... I myself was riding during that windstorm...and by the time I exited the woods it was pretty scary...I could hear trees popping and falling... and as I was leaving Seneca some guys stopped my car as one of the trees on the walking loop was slowly falling over the road...very slowly...kinda weird...but I made it out alive... Rachel is my daughter's name, and she's getting into it just the past few years... Let me know when / where I can meet you and I'll get it to you...email me directly at happypop at insightbb dot com, OK? |

TWL, I can speak from experience and tell you that making a mtn bike video is an ass load of work but you can always sell the videos and with any luck make your money back. of course it is a lot cheaper to do these days than it was when i did it. I would love for someone to document the 09 KPS. I am sure you could sell one to every body that races that year. I say go for it. Copyrights? unless you plan on selling millions of dvd's I wouldn't worry bout it. |

You may want to check with some of the photographers at some of the races. They should have some experience in copyrighting material and the best ways to distribute them. Also you may want to toy with a few other things: selling the videos in a digital format online for people to download (cuts down on costs/time recording DVDs) and working with/under an existing photographer. Find out who has the video equipment you need (and consider what quality of cameras you need) and get a group together. I would be willing to come out to a few races and record on my old digital camera and donate footage to you (if you pay for the digital tapes). |
