| I need some help getting my Avid BB7 front brake adjusted properly. I added a disc wheel and the brake to my 08' Trek 4500 and something is just not correct. I installed all the parts and even had the bike shop make the final adjustments, but I'm guessing they didn't test ride the bike. I took it to Duffield Saturday, and rode the xc trail, when I got done there was an obvious line all the way around each side of the rotor where the pads are not making contact correctly. Not to mention my old V-brakes seemed to stop me much better. I tried turning the knobs different ways and messed it up worse i believe. The instructions that came with the brakes are not very descriptive to say the least... Currently (no matter how much i mess with the knobs) the rotor bends toward the caliper when I apply the brake...maybe 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch. Could anyone give me some steps to correcting the brakes. I would sure appreciate it. |

First, follow the initial set-up diagram on where the rotor should be placed. All I can remember right now is that you should run it fairly close to the stationary pad. Now, hand tighten all the bolts (both sets) maintaining this position. Have your wrench handy. Pull on your brake lever and hold. Tighten the bolts that mount to the frame and then to the bracket. Try not to torque on the caliper body when you get it close to snug. Adjust the pad that moves (pad adjustment knob) and cable tension till it feels right. The first ride on a disc brake is always fair. You have to bed in the pads. |

| I have a rock shocks dart 3, and you don't use the bracket at all. the caliper mounts directly to the fork.... still confused.... ?? the pad adjustment knob is on the inner side near the wheel, or the outer side. there are two adjustment knobs. ??? the diagram is crap. there are at least 15 different languages, and I don't believe the one in english is very helpful. It doesn't tell you how to do these adjustments, only to do them. FE: mount the caliper to the fork, make sure you have the correct bracket. .... i don't use the bracket at all, and mounting the caliper is rather confusing when all the washers, and spacers and the rotor is involved. as i said i know the caliper is mounted correctly as far as the spacers and washers go, but do i need to loosen the bolts that hold the caliper to the fork, and adjust it's overall position? any further help would be greatly appreciated. ... i am rather new to bike mechanics, so please talk to me like i am 4. I am a skilled auto mechanic, but this bike is rather intimidating to me. |

Both pads have an adjustment knob. I think the inner pad is fixed and the outer pad is the one that moves. So, run the rotor close to the inner pad. The beveled washers enable you to run the caliper parallel to the rotor. Without them, you can't align the caliper correctly unless you are really lucky. I assume you have a post-mount fork which means you don't use the bracket. But, you can still use the beveled washers I presume. I dunno. Can't help you further without seeing it. |

I'm thinking that both sides of a BB7 are adjustable; it's the BB5 that has a fixed pad. Let me get stupidly simple; flip the bike over (I personally don't have a stand) and see if the rotor runs in a clear path through the pads. Is it roughly in the center of them when rotated? If so, you sould be able to adjust the contact point so that both pads make contact at the same time (approximately). If the rotor is'nt running through the center to begin with, then you have rotor mounting issues. If it is running ok, then it's back to the pad adjustment area. You might pull the wheel and make sure that both pads are installed correctly (under the little spring bracket on both sides). Good luck! |
