| Going to a job site this morning, I passed the Outer Loop exit and noticed a ton of police and an ambulance. Come to find out, another cyclist killed. I just saw Ty Rich being interviewed on the news. Be careful out there, it looks like another slap on the wrist for taking someones life. |

I searched the web for the story and came across something that answered a question I raised on the forum a while back. the "white bike" I have seen at different places in town is referred to as a "ghost bike" and serves as a memorial to a cyclists killed near the memorial. The one on the corner of lexington and grinstead has since been moved. |

Thats horrible yet expected.
The roads of Louisville are no place for cyclists. I wont even own a road bike for this reason. people damn near side swipe me every day in a small econo box much less a bike.
They all are too busy talking on the phone, putting on lip stick, eatin a cheeseburger, smoking and masturbating while changing cd's. They have no span of time to actually DRIVE and pay attention to the road.
Yeah you guys will preach some shizzle about rights and it's not that I don't agree with you. It's that I see this city for what it is.
Hopefully one day the roads will be safe for those that dare road ride but for now you can count me out. |

I dunno. I'm appalled at some of the stupid riding I see by cyclists all the time. Some of them almost seem to have a death wish, riding at night, no lights or reflectors, no helmet, wrong side of street, darting out into traffic, etc, etc. I don't know about the details of the person killed. Couldn't find anything on the LBC site or the Courier-journal site. I wear bright red, have a blinky on even during broad daylight, avoid riding when the bright sun is low on the horizon, and use the dreaded dorky-but-effective rear view mirrors. I've had close calls twice, both by rednecks in huge pick-up trucks who tried to brush me without provocation. Gutless buttholes. While on Cochran Hill, however, I feel like my life is in constant danger. |

| not to seem elitist, but lets be clear; the guy who was killed was a man riding a bike, not a cyclist. we all know the difference. it is still sad, and i'm sure even if he was a "cyclist" the outcome would have been the same. |

I don't see too many dumb cyclists, but maybe it's just where I live. Most people riding bicycles seem to stick to their neighborhoods and off busier roads. Unfortunately two of my friends are pretty dangerous. I let them know what I thought about their bike skills...

"Police say Kokojan was killed when a Honda Accord that was following a semi too closely tried to pass it on the right. Sgt. Travis Hatchell with the LMPD Traffic Unit said the driver of the Honda changed lanes quickly, and struck the bicyclist. 'Apparently he didn't have enough room away from the semi to react to the bicycle being in the roadway.' Metro Police say Kokojan was not wearing a helmet, but did have small flashing lights on the front and rear of his bicycle. The stretch of road Kokojan was riding on is a busy road, and it wasn't fully light outside." The rest of the WAVE3 Story Here... In this case, I don't know if he really could have done a whole lot to prevent the accident. Wear a helmet people. It will at least give you a better chance. |

Hmmm. This is the thing I don't get about the news coverage on this: Car hits car and kills someone = vehicular manslaughter. Car hits bicyclist and kills them = guy on bike should not have been there.
Granted, I would not ride my bike down there but from what I heard on the news this guy was commuting to UPS. As the number of bike commuters increases this kind of thing will increase too until drivers are prosectuted and the police and city take drive bys and near misses seriously.
I'm always amazed at how many motorists think cyclists just should not be there. Sort of "if I hit you and kill you from behind then its your fault for being there" attitude. I run into it almost weekly and wonder where it comes from - until I hear the police interviews talking about how the cyclist should not have been there. OK, then make outer loop a highway and mark it - no cyclists, pedestrians or equestrians.
Come to think of it do you think there would be community outrage if someone hit and killed a horse and rider on outer loop?

Yeah, it's frustrating. I wrote something similar in the "Get Off The Road" thread. It's actually amazing to me that more cyclists don't get killed. This is the second fatality of the year for Louisville.

| If I wouldn't have to wake up at 3 in the morning, I would have prolly commuted to UPS as well....before they moved to the outer loop. At least when we were on Ashbottom Rd, you could take less busy roads to get there, now, you have no choice but to use the outer loop and it's pretty sketchy for sure. |

| TBob, sorry but your going to have to explain why a guy that rides from the Highlands to Outer Loop isn't a cyclist. Is it because he wasn't wearing a helmet. Seriously, I just want to know, because I have been known to be a little irresponsible myself when puttering around the neighborhood. Also, if he does this a couple of times a week, he puts in more miles than me and I may have thought I was a cyclist. |

| Maybe I am wrong. Or maybe the news I saw screwed up shots or something, but I say that based on the picture they showed of a purple Huffy. An, no, brand doesn't make one a "cyclist," but come on, we all know the difference between cyclists and people who are using bikes. I see guys in Smoketown riding their bikes everyday, but would not call them cyclists. |
