SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2008 OTTER CREEK PARK BRANDENBURG, KENTUCKY The Otter Creek Challenge is an 8-hour adventure race that challenges soloists and teams of 2, 3 or 4 people to trek, mountain bike, paddle, rappel, navigate, and perform other feats of derring-do in their quest for the coveted "Golden Otter" award. The ROGAINE-style course ensures that veteran racers get as much as they can handle and that beginners don't bite off more than they can chew. If you clear the course, you'll have earned some bragging rights. Your entry fee buys you a course designed and vetted by experienced adventure racers; high quality course maps; dinner on Friday night; post-race food; a wicking race t-shirt; and a load of great door prizes. Register by August 13th and receive a discounted entry rate of just $55 per racer. After August 13th, registration will run you $75 per racer. Lodging is available in a group cabin for $15 per person per night (Friday and/or Saturday) and boats are available for rent for $20 (canoe or kayak). Yes, the day before. A couple of months back, the RD for the MTB race contacted me to advise that he was hoping to schedule a MTB race for that Sunday and inquire whether that would interfere with our race already scheduled for Saturday. I told him that I thought it would work quite nicely, actually, to have both events on the same weekend. Our consensus was that we might be able to generate some cross-interest by billing this as an "adventure weekend" at the park. I hadn't heard anything more from him, so I wasn't sure whether he had gone forward with the race on Sunday. I'm glad to hear it's a go. Given the format of the adventure race - which allows racers to select their own routes from checkpoint to checkpoint - there should not be a problem with overuse on any one trail from the race on Saturday, even if it should turn out to be a wet weekend. I'd encourage anyone who is curious about adventure racing but not so sure about entering a race just yet to come out early on Saturday and volunteer. We have free lodging available in a group cabin at Camp Tecumseh on Saturday night for anyone who volunteers at least 4 hours during the day. Just let me know if you're interested.
