| looks like the ohio race, Caesar's creek, will start at 1 p.m. and the sport class will start a little later for the capitol view stxc but that's cause they need one class to be done before they start the next. All the other races have been starting at 11:00 just as planned. |

| Some people were kind of surprised the Duff race went off so late because of the heat. Course, I guess that helps out of towners to get there on time. So, pluses and minuses. |

| I was loading up the car at 7:30 a.m. and it was already hot so starting at 9 wouldn't have done us much better |

True. I rode the park from 8:30 till close to start time and sweated buckets as well. I was just hoping there wouldn't be a few heat strokes to go along with the bumps, scrapes, cuts and couple of collar bones Duffield collects every year. |

Nope, no heat stroke that I'm aware of. The Pro/Expert start time was dictated by the Points Series rules. Beginner start could have started before the Pro/Ex/Sports, but we followed the current trend and kept them after the fast guys. Might not be a bad idea for the races in the hotter months to start them at 9:00 or 9:30 as long as they're finished before 11:00. You really don't want a pack of hard-charging Experts to come flying up on a tired beginner. I don't think too many folks would be happy in that situation. |

Duane made a great call to shorten the distance of the race due to the heat. I struggled with the race time change but after hearing all sides I felt 11 am was the best compromise. The temp typically rises 5-6 degrees from 9am to llam but the humidity tends to drop alot after 11am. I will encourage future race directors to shorten race distances in the event of extreme heat. That decision will have to be made race day.

| What I was trying to ask is if the same starts apply to all classes every race. I know that the races start at 11:00 but having all other classes besides pro/expert start at different times is what I thought we were trying to avoid. I"m out due to injury but when I showed up at almost 1 and was told the beginners haven't even started I was surprised. Green river every racer was on the starting line and every racer started between 11 and 11:30. It was like 5 minute intervals, which I thought was awesome. So it is up to the race promotors on start times and not the series correct??? |

| the start times are up to the promoters. The only thing I asked is that the races started no earlier than 11am. If it is a 10+ mile loop you can get away with running all classes in 1 or 2 minute intervals but with a 5-7 mile loop you have to separate the field. Cherokee will follow the Duffield format of start times. |

Why do they start the beginners races so late?
Is it because the pros/experts and sports wouldn't be caught dead on the trail with us during a race? just kidding
Is it because we may steal your MOJO? more of the same
Rusty, maybe you can answer this...

The decision to start the beginners separately at Duffield was based on several things: 1. Laps were ~ 4.5 miles. Expert leaders were running 25 min laps. It wouldn't take long to catch the beginners. 2. Limited passing opportunities in some key spots. We were concerned that the big difference in abilities, particularly on some long climbs, could potentially have a negative impact on the race. We considered starting the beginners at 9 am instead of 1 pm, but that didn't meet the series rules and we had already posted the 1pm start. From the perspective of a Race Director, I would have preferred to have the beginners run with the Experts & Sports so we could have gotten the Super-D started 2 hours earlier. Heck, we might have been able to add a separate Downhill race with the extra time. Running separate classes at separate times is more work, taxes the volunteer pool more, and makes for a much longer day, so I doubt the Race Directors would run them separately unless they thought it necessary. |
