December 6, 2009 (Louisville, KY) - Chrissy Halioris, Olivia Jaras, Michael Seiler and Michael Webber were all crowned KY State Cyclocross Champions in their divisions at Storm the Greens the finale of the Ohio Valley Cyclocross Series. Jaras, Seiler and Webber won their respective races as well. Rogue Racing Project also placed 3 additional podium places at the race that serves as the Kentucky state championships in cyclocross.

Results from the OVCX Series finale were just the cherry on top of an amazing inaugural year for the Rogue Racing Project. The Project was formed to join together a growing group of Louisville area athletes with interests in a variety of athletic endeavors. This year Project members competed in Ironman Louisville & Florida, adventure races, regional road racing, and numerous triathlons and running events across the US, including the Boston marathon! Rouge Racing Project racers, part of Louisville’s latest bike racing and endurance sports team, took the podium 7 times this weekend at Storm the Greens held at the infamous River Road Country Club course. Fourteen Rogue Racing Project racers took to the course in races spanning Cat 4 to Elite. Also making a trip to the podium was Sherri Thompson, John “Fatty” Harris and Doug Roemer.

Michael Webber, in his newbie year of racing CX held off those pesky Red Zone racers, taking a first in the Cat 4 Men’s race and locking in his position as Kentucky State Champion. Also a Kentucky State Champion, after a nail biting sprint to the finish against Ohio State Champion Nancy Henderson, Oli Jaras took her first place medal in the Cat 3 Woman’s race. Michael Seiler, not to be out done, handily won the Cat 3 45+ race and found himself the Kentucky State Champion. Seiler moved up to Cat 3, after winning the Kentucky State Championship for the Cat 3/4’s last year. Seiler shared the podium with fellow Rogue Fatty Harris who took second. Chrissy Halioris, racing in the 3/4 Maters 35+ came away with the Kentucky State Championship gold, sharing the podium with Sherri Thompson at second in her inaugural CX racing season. Finally, Doug Roemer snapped up the bronze in the Kentucky State Championship for the Cat 4 35+ race. In addition to these wins at the Kentucky Championship, Claudia Fritzinger raced last weekend, and took home the Cat 4 Indiana State Championship.

Despite the bitter cold and slippery start, as the racing day wore on and the sun shone, Rogue teammates came out in force to race, support their friends and other competitors and make the most of this final race and a fitting send off to River Road Country Club. Knowing this to be the last race on this much beloved course, the Calisotoga racing team put on an amazing event. Bob Bobrow, John Mandrola, Mike McShane and the whole Calistoga family made sure it was a day to remember with fun races for the big and little kids, pizza for all, and amazing lottery prizes for the racers.

The Rogue Racing Project did their best to support the frivolity by contributing adult treats to warm the body. The Rogue Racing Project anticipates good racing and much fun in the year to come, and is open to new members with similar goals!

Yeah, yeah, yeah but tell us all what we all REALLY want to know. Who won the DFL Bourbon in the Elite race?

Our very own Zach Sager won it after a brilliant tactical move by me to draw Joe Czerwonka (Bob's Red Mill/Rocky Mountain) to chase me just prior to USAC official intervention.

There were cries of foul from some noted spectators who were demanding that the person had to actually finish the race. But the sponsor of the prize overruled the objections and Zach did share his winnings with all willing (and some unwilling) participants.

Nice job to all...but I have to say that DFL race was the most fun I've had watching a CX race EVER. Well, OK, the beer hand ups in the Women's Elite was pretty fun too...congratulations to all those who raced and especially to Zach who knows how to lose like a pro.

I still think Rick Toler is the rightful winner of the DFL prize. You guys owe him a bottle.

Why don't we all get together, with a bottle, and discuss it. I'm sure we can work it out. I'll bring the ice.

According to the rules, Section 3.1 of USAC Bylaw 8A, "Men's Elite DFL must, immediately following the completion of the last race in a cyclocross series, produce a carrot cake of no less than three (3) layers. It must also be tasty. This overrides any previous DFL stipulations, anywhere, ever." So there you have it. Fair and square.

Oh and Seiler, well played sir. The Rogues were some formidable opponents. Until next year.

Is Duane's real name Debbie Downer?
No, we have a different name for him on those long team training rides.
